Cornell Engineering Supplemental Essay - With A Free Essay Review

Ever since I was little, it was apparent that engineering would be my calling. My inquisitive nature as well as my participation in several math competitions put me on this path. Now, my main goal is to find how I can incorporate my other talents and hobbies with my engineering skills. Playing computer games like StarCraft has always been one of my favorite hobbies, and I combined my love for these games with computer science. I played around with programs like GameMaker and Android AppInventor, which help me with programming my own games. My dream is to create my own games and maybe found a business selling them. Cornell’s Department of Computer Science can teach me the things I need to know to make my dream a reality. With one of the best computer science programs in the nation, Cornell has knowledgeable faculty who can further develop my ideas. Moreover, starting and running a business won’t be easy, but I believe it can be done with Cornell’s large support for entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship@Cornell has various programs and courses that can assist me, in addition to numerous people who can give me advice.

I am also interested in how my musical talent can be incorporated with engineering and computer science. The collaboration that Cornell’s music department has with other disciplines can allow me to do just that. I am particularly attracted to the new Concentration in Computing in the Arts, which emphasizes how the role of computers influences the arts. I could learn how to change the world of music using my knowledge of computer science.

Although my future plans for college are not entirely certain, I know that won’t be a problem at Cornell. If I start as an undecided engineer, I can explore the different areas of study before deciding on one. And Cornell has a great number of engineering majors and minors to choose from. I am also impressed by the number and quality of the research facilities on campus. I love discovering new things and finding creative ways to solve problems, and these research facilities will allow me to do that. I am especially excited about Cornell’s Engineering Co-op program, where I can learn new things in class, and then apply them to the real world. In this way, I can gain knowledge about engineering, while preparing for my future career.

My main desire isn’t just a degree in engineering; I want my college experience to enjoyable. Cornell is the perfect place for me to accomplish both of these goals. Especially with groups like the Association of Computer Science Undergraduates, I can meet and get together with other students interested in computer science. With its large student population and innumerable activities to choose from, Cornell University can help me learn as much as I can about engineering, while also having a great time outside of the classroom.

This is the best of the several essays you've submitted here, so I'll use that, and not just the fact that I'm overwhelmed a little by the number of holiday-time submissions, as my justification for saying little about it, and that mostly about tone. Take a look at these sentences which begin and end one paragraph: "I am also interested in how my musical talent can be incorporated with engineering and computer science" and "I could learn how to change the world of music using my knowledge of computer science." I'm not sure what the prompt for this essay is, but I think regardless that you should change the emphasis here from your interest in you to your interest in Cornell. What you should be saying here is that you are interested in the possible intersection between engineering and the discipline of music, not between engineering and your musical talent; perhaps you put it the way you do in order to communicate the fact that you have musical talent; you don't need to do that here. You need, I think, to demonstrate your intellectual curiosity, not announce your talents, which should, in any case, be inferred. The second sentence I've quoted has the same kind of problem. Again, what you want to demonstrate is your interest in certain kinds of problems, but you don't specify any particular issues with the world of music that you imagine might be addressed from an engineering or CS approach, and end up instead just sounding a bit pompous.

Best, EJ.
