Essay Question: Why do American scientists and doctors use the metric system instead of the customary system of measurement?
--Click here to see that the metric system is based on the number 10, so it is mathematically easier to convert numbers from one unit to another. The customary system is made up of various numbers. (12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard, 5,280 feet in a mile)
--Most other counties use the metric system, so American scientists and doctors use the metric system also so they have a "common language of numbers" to share information and research around the world. You will always use the metric system in your science classes. Click here to view a world map showing which countries use the metric system and which countries do not use the metric system.
